Sudo Su denies password accepted by just Su

I am having a simple problem that is still perplexing me. I am on FC4, and I have tried to install a new video card (pretty old but newer than the Nvidia RIVA I was using). It needs the root password to run a reprobe or something to install the new driver. However, when I put in my root password, it tells me it is wrong. I tried it in the terminal, and when I use the sudo su command to get root access, it denies my password, but the su command takes it and gets me in as root. Is there a separate password for this?

I believe the sudo command requires a little more setup... there's a file in /etc called sudoers that contains information on which users are allowed to use the sudo command, and what commands they are allowed to execute with it. I'd bet this is the source of your problem.

To edit this file, use the visudo command (which starts up vi editing the /etc/sudoers file).

For more information, see the visudo man page.

I don't know why you say "sudo su"; you use "sudo <command>" to run commands as root without logging in as root. When it asks for your password, you enter your password and not root's.
