subtitles mpeg4 mplayer

I am slowly working out issues with my freevo system, which uses mplayer. I am having trouble with displaying subtitles in dvd movies that I have ripped to mpeg4, I have been using dvd::rip for this task. I am able to render the subtitles permanently onto my mpeg4 movies. But I do not want every word spoken displayed. Most movies just have one or a few lines that you need the subtitles displayed. Just curious what you guys are doing for this situation.
