Question Stupid question???

Ok, please dont laugh, but here is a question that is probably stated incorrectly.

Do applications and their dependant lib files every get out of "version sync"? If so, is there a program that manages this?

thanks

You sometimes get binary incompatability with major number version changes, like kde2 to kde3 for example, but most version number changes are binary compatable, kde3.0 to kde3.2 for example.

gentoo handles that stuff with emerge.
debian with apt
redhat and mandrake with rpm

you can usually ldd programname or library to see
what it needs, and whether you have it.

great information.. thanks to you both... I have been looking at Red-Carpet, RHN as well as Synaptic and they each seem to be comprhensive but dsparate at the smae time. Is there something that will seen everything that is installed (not just what is in the freshmeat database etc) and find the latest releases?

Thanks again for everyones input!!!
