Stream linux to linux with seeking

Hi,
I'm working at a small school, we recently bough a very good set of HD documentaries. Normals computers didn't had enough free hdd space so I stored them on our server. Now I need a way to allow certain computers to access and play the files directly from the server. I mean just like youtube, without browser+flash overhead.

I tried vlc streaming , it was nice, but to pausing, skiping or seeking buttons didn't worked. The http remote of vlc was a workaround but I created and unnecessary complexity for my users.
Second problem is ,my users need to be able to select from existing documentaries.

Lots of shell scripting, mounted network folder and thunar costum actions can form a kludge but I'm searching for a better solution.

You could try setting up a shoutcast server on the machine housing the videos (i believe it lets you play videos too), but not sure if it'll allow skipping. What restrictions though have you put in place to not allow them to just browse to the network drive, open the video and play it? Seems youre making a mountain out of an ant hill here.

Holy shit, you are right seeking and skipping in network drive should work fine... how did I forgot that. Thanks!

also, if anyone know and alternative way of doing this, I'm still pretty interested
