make sure that snmpwalk works by itself. Try something like:
Code:
snmpwalk -Os -c public -v 1 your.router.name.here system
you can replace system with 'if' for interface a number of other things associated with MIBs (though I'm not real familiar with them myself).

If that doesn't work, make sure you have snmp(d) turned on on the server you are trying to monitor. To check if it's running, try
Code:
prompt# /etc/init.d/snmpd status or
prompt# chkconfig --list snmpd
Yet, these are RH commands, I don't know that it's the same with Debian.

Hope this helps.

My recommendation is to make sure that you can get snmpwalk working first because MRTG relies on that. For documentationn on snmpwalk check out
http://net-snmp.sourceforge.net/
snmpwalk then fills in the numbers in the .log files. For example /home/httpd/mrtg/192.168.0.1_cpu.log and I believe the graph then plots the lines from these numbers.

Two other things that you can check is 1) make sure that a firewall or ACL (on a router) is blocking the snmp traffic and 2) capture the packets with Ethereal and make sure that they are actually going to and from the device you are trying to monitor.

HTH,
PJT
