Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

well, i'm using slackware 9.1 and if i want to start an app in a gui (e.g. xmms) and it's not in the spiffy application menu bar thing, i've found i can start it with a "virtual terminal." but what if I want to close that terminal? the app closes too, and the terminal is useless untill i close the app. there must be a way to start an app without a terminal window or not lock the two together. i've been using various gui's like gnome blackbox and kde.
well thanks mikshaw. that's better than I had, because when I do that I can still use the terminal for other things, BUT xmms will still close when I close the terminal. any other ideas? I looked in the bash help but couldn't quite decipher anything.

'xmms &' will start the process in the background. when i close my terminal xmms doesnt close.
When I close the virtual terminal background processes I started from that terminal are killed too. Maybe it depends on the terminal...
I know in gnome you can ad an icon to the taskbar (right click...) and fill in the command to start the application. In fluxbox you can easily change the menu by editing a file called fluxbox-menu (I think it was), you have to copy the system-wide config file to your personal .fluxbox directory in your home directory. Blackbox isn't very differrent from fluxbox I think...
