speeding up pan?

I just want to use one connection at a time to download a newsgroup i subscribe to. At the moment im using pan to do this, but it seems to take forever to download new messages (text messages, no binaries)

I see a message 1@3.6kbs in a display box as the download is happening. I want to speed pan up so it downloads text newsgroup messages quicker. How can i do this please? Windows programs seem to download the same newsgroup in the blink of an eye..

thanks
