Sound card dual/multiple use
System specs:
Dell OptiPlex GX110
OS: Dual Boot with Windows 2000 and RedHat 9
Soundcard: Intel 82801AA/AB AC'97
Trouble is this. When I’m on Linux, my soundcard cannot be dual-used by different applications. That is, say I’m running XMMS, I can’t have another application generate sound; get the error gist "Soundcard in use".
I know this its not the soundcard as this can be easily accomplished in Windows. Hope some "sound" advice is on the "cards" for me.

If you're using ALSA you have to run sound via a sound server or you have to script software mixing yourself.

Are you using ALSA or OSS drivers, it doesn't sound like you are actually. Try enabling either and I bet it will solve your problem.

Nope alsa doesn't in any case automatically you have to script it then or use a sound server. I don't know for OSS but oss isn't free isn;t it or is just the kernel version ok.

darkleaf and jchance,
I'm using neither ALSA nor OSS. As far as OSS is concerned, I'm open to purchasing software, but I'm more of an enthusiast than a serious user whose use wouldn't justify the expenditure.
Earlier, I've had some trouble trying to install ALSA, but I'll try it again, this time more fastidiously. I found that link particularly helpful.
Sincerely appreciate your direction and support!
Yogi
