Sony Pictures DVD and Mplayer

Is there any reason why my mplayer has problems playing DVD's from Sony Pictures? Xine has problems too. The symptoms are not always the same. Sometimes they will play part way and sometimes they will play only the intro.

Some makers have recently been including passive anti-copy measures on their dvds, mostly bad sectors and such, that make them difficult or impossible for computer drives to read cleanly. That could be the cause of your playback problems.

Don't buy anything from Sony, apart from the rootkit issues (for windows users) they are champions of drm .

The incompatibility is apparently by design. I am still running windows 2000 with updates and the same DVD"s play fine even on the old dvd playback software there. So, Sony must have given Microsoft the pass key. I wonder if playback on Macs is affected and if it is so effective why aren't others using it?
