Ok, I see it all over the boards: Don't mess with Red Hat 7.0, go with 7.2. OK. But, being the newbie I am, I picked up a copy of RH7. Is there a good spot to pick up 7.2 on the net? Astalavista or something? Can I install and just update the kernel? Or is that just a silly question? I don't have a whole lot of $$$ to shell out on a retail copy...
All Linux distributions are free if you download it. Better have a fast connection though. Big files. Yet, none the less free. Just find red hat's website and you'll be able to surf into their ftp server or whatever they do to offer the files. I dunno much about red hat, but yes, you can also if you want just update the kernel to a newer one. www.kernel.org is the authority on that and having all of those available. Hope this helped some...Have a good one...
You can also try to update using the update utility shipped with Red Hat, much like windows update.
Take a look at the "start"-menu under program - system I think.
Me again.
I successfully used FIPS and elected to install my copy of RH7 and update after install. Installation process seemed fine. Used Disk Druid to delete new unformatted partition that was created thru FIPS. Added: 64mbs swap partition, 500 mbs boot, 1000 mbs /, 2000 mbs /user. The rest of install process was relatively simple. Upon 'begin installation' at end of process, I receive an error - which explains that it is probably a bug. It asks if I would like to save the bug report to floppy. I select this option but yet the information does not save to the floppy. Any tips? Is this 'probably a bug' message common? Is there a simple explanation?
- I made sure that my package installation was small enough to fit in /user...
- I tried a second time to install and did not recieve bug message but locked up during 'formatting/install file system'
- I will successfully install this if it is the last thing I do on this Earth.
My book suggested a custom workstation install. Maybe next time. I installed auto workstation install - everything came up roses. Objective complete. Thank you all for all of your help.
I'm sure I'll be back - at least with tougher questions nest time.
