Unhappy SNES9x error: XF86DGANoDirectVideoMode

I'm trying to get SNES9x running. I'm using the syntax:

snes9x -stereo -r 6 -tr myrom.zip

and I get the following error:

X Error of failed request: XF86DGANoDirectVideoMode
Major opcode of failed request: 137 (XFree86-DGA)
Minor opcode of failed request: 1 (XF86DGAGetVideoLL)
Serial number of failed request: 11
Current serial number in output stream: 11

This happens even if I run it with root priviledges.

I'm using:

Fedora Core 4 updated, upgraded (yum)
Kernel 2.6.16-1.2111_FC4
I'd give my XFree86 ver if I knew where to find it...

Help? =)

I can't find an answer for your problem on Google, you may want to try ZSNES if you haven't.

I'm having the same problem on FC5. Looks like this is to do with nVidia removing (thanks guys) DGA support from their drivers. Still looking for the answer (ZSNES doesnt work for me either), lemme know if you find one.

Try removing the set-user-ID bit from the executable:
Code:
chmod -s /path/to/snes9x
As a consequence you will no longer have fullscreen support but snes9x should work.

Nope, still no worky. It looks like everything is specified correctly, and I disabled the DGA option from the X11/Unix section in the config file but it still doesn't work. Any more help on this?

Hey, have an update! I was able to fix the problem. Like most I started the unpack/untar of the tarball as root. Didn't exit root mode after I did that.

On a whim I deleted the unpacked dir (I had modified the config) and unpacked from the start. Then exited root mode, cd'ed to the dir:

cd <path>/snes9x/

then ran the following:

./snes9x <path to rom>/<rom name including extension>

The ./snes9x is to tell it to look for the exec in the dir you're currently in (explicit declaration) because it wouldn't accept just the exec. Turns out that (if you read the readme) it's a known issue, but they didn't post a work around. If you exec as root it tries to launch the full-screen module, which is a broken module that hasn't been used for some time (2.4.x kernel?). Exec as user over-rides this. You can't use full-screen but it works.
