snd-intel8x0 module

The sound on my laptop is horrible. I know that using the headphone jack to connect my laptop to an external receiver is not ideal but it's the only thing I can do for now. When the master volume in Linux is turned up, the sound gets all distorted and sounds really crappy. How do I tweak the snd-intel8x0 module to sound better? I just want to get better output. On my desktop I had the emu10k1 driver for the soundblaster live platinum card and the output was awesome. One more thing, it seems that only one application at a time can use the sound drivers. What is the deal with that? Usually you can listen to mp3's, watch movies, and edit waves all at the same time (it would sound horrible though). Any suggestions would be great.
