Frankly, the whole permissions thing was just a shot in the dark...it seems to me if that were an issue you'd see some messages in the log on the server box.

have you tried just a simple file transfer to verify the mount? ie: without setup running and with the directory mounted manually, copy a file from the server to the client. I don't expect that to work, because if it did the setup program wouldn't have any trouble either, but perhaps it'll gen an error message that will be more enlightening.
