slackware 10.0 power off how to?

I have slack 10 installed on my laptop. I am having a power off problem with it. When I run "shutdown" command on my desktop computer the system and shuts down and then power is off lastly. But when I run shutdown on my laptop as a last action I do have to push the power button. How can I overcome this problem. The poweroff command also does not poweroff the device.

I think "shutdown -h now" will do the trick for you.

the problem is probably with your power settings in your kernel. Im not sure exactly if laptops are different, but most modern computers us acpi to manage their power. Many users in the past (including myself) have experiance the same problem where their kernel is configured to use apm and their computer just halts instead of shutting down. To fix this i suggest rebuilding your kernel with all the acpi options under power management enabled.

Good luck

You need to load the apm module. I use halt because less letters to type. It does all the unmounting and turns off my computer.

I also setup a way to run halt as a user, but only certain users can power down the computer.
