Linux distro:
Mandriva One 2010.0-KDE
kernel(after update):-> 2.6.31.12-desktop586-1mnb
Pentium 4 3.4GHz
Used to boot to kenrel 2.6.31.6 for the past 2 months updating my system whenever i was asked to-NO PROBLEMS so far(till yesterday in fact)
Mandriva yesterday, offered a list of system updates including the kernel 2.6.31.12 and the respective Nvidia drivers.Boot to that kernel computer reacted as usual and everything seemed to run properly.
HOWEVER,when i tried to shutdown the system everything powered off(hdd-keyboard) except the CPU(and the power supplier).I restart(manually) the system boot in and try to reboot it-NO Problem-logout NO Problem
but FAILED TO SHUTDOWN PROPERLY AGAIN.
As far as I know it's not the latest stable kernel so is the problem focused only on kernel?

Used to boot to kenrel 2.6.32.6 for the past 2 months .......... updates including the kernel 2.6.31.12
That confuses me. Is the problem on 2.6.32.6, and I don't think that kernel version is even 2 weeks old is it?
I found on Slackware that I was hanging on shutdown using 2.6.32.2 and possibly 2.6.32.5 (I haven't used it in a few days). I'm using 2.6.33-rc5 right now and I haven't been having the problem, but then again I've been using
PHP Code:
halt -n
to shutdown. I've run the same kernels on another slack machine and had no problems at all.
Hi,
For what it's worth I had the exact same problem with the 2.6.31.12 desktop -1mnb kernel upgrade in Mandriva 2010..It booted fine but would hang on shutdown..I reverted back to the XXXX,6 kernel and all is well again..I found this link by google..
I thought you should know,
jolphil
I meant 2.6.31.6 and NOT 2.6.32.6--error while typing-sorry for the misunderstanding.
Me and Jolphil encounter the same problem.
But is only Mandriva related problem with the kernel 2.6.31.12?as many users(mandriva ones) have reported the same
Until it is fixed I use the previous kernel:2.6.31.6
in fact,as long as I used kernel 2.6.31.12 it worked fine -except the shutdown(power off) failure

Hi DimitriuSV
It would be interesting to compare our systems..
Intel P4 3.0Ghz Stepping 9, cpu family 15
Chipset Intel P865
Nvidia GE Force 7800 video card(agp)
Memory 2ghz ddr 800mhx FSB
I wonder if all the complaints are this family of CPU/Chipsets...
jolphil
Jolphil, you have reported your problem asking for a solutions to other forum-this is where i remember your name.I first did a google-search but found nothing to help me and I tried here-probably no solution here as well.My system is:
Probably is a distro related problem as icant give another explanation to that.
Everything is halted except the CPU-has it to do with that?really dont know even im a bit experienced as computer science is what im studing
P.S on the other hand,i dont really mind cause almost no important differences between these 2 kernels just for curiosity and scientific knowledge.

Hi,
I found a temporary solution to my problem..I went into install/remove programs and removed the 2.6.32.12 kernel..It automatically removed the corresponding nvidia kernel and on reboot it defaulted to the 2.6.31.6 kernel which shuts down fine..
So far my update center has NOT tried to install the .12 kernel..Fingers crossed..
Goodluck,
jolphil
You dont need to have your fingers crossed...
First, you are not obliged to install the new kernel
moreover, even the new kernel is installed you can change the 'new' boot from the Mandriva Control Center in order to boot to the previous kernel(2.6.31.6-this is what I did) rather than try to uninstall it!A bit weird the way you reacted!!..
P.S You can have as many kernels as you want and the respective number of choices(from the Grub) to boot from--it seems that you might ignore that..!
