send mplayer output over network?

Hi.

We just picked up a new tv and I was wondering if it would be possible to send mplayer output from my computer over the network to the tv.

The tv has wireless capability, and my computer is also connected via wireless.

Anyone done something like this before? How would I go about setting something like this up?

Hi!
I don't quite understand what you'd like to do exactly. You'd want to pipe mplayer output directly to the tv (likely specifying it's IP address) and you'd expect the tv to show that mplayer output regardless of what the tv is doing at the moment? I don't think this is possible and, frankly, I don't even think that's a desirable feature for a tv.
What you're probably looking for is a DLNA-compliant UPnP media server to share media files over the network in an accessible way for the tv, if the tv can play that content. Try usgin some UPnP media servers like PS3 Media Server, MediaTomb etc.

Hi, and thanks for the response!

Yeah, something along the lines of what you mentioned is what I was thinking, with the exception of probably putting the tv into a "listen" mode first. I wasn't sure if anything like that had been done, so that's why I wasn't too sure what I was trying to describe. Essentially I would just like all the playback capabilities I can get from my comp with mplayer (multiple formats, on the fly filters, etc) onto the bigger tv display since it's way bigger than my monitor. My wife has a PS3 which we use as the main video player but I'm just not sure of it's capabilities as compared to mplayer.

I will look into PS3 media server as you suggest. This is all new to me! My old tv was really old and didn't even have RCA hookups!

Well, the ideal way to do that would be to plug the pc to the tv via a HDMI cable
If that's not feasible and your tv isn't DLNA compliant, you can still resort to the PS3 augmenting its multimedia capabilities via a UPnP media server like those I mentioned before.
The PS3 can play most media files, but is not compatible with some formats (guess what - mkv can't be played directly if you where thinking about it). For these (ridiculous) shortcomings, PS3 Media Server, for example, can exploit mplayer or VLC (depending on what's available on the system) to remux on the fly those contents making them compatible with the PS3.
You can even overlay on the fly ssa/ass softsubs, if any are found in the source file

I went ahead and set up an older computer with minidlna, and I'm happy with the results! This is what I had in mind. The only issues I'm having at this point I believe are related to the underpowered nature of the server in question! Thanks again!
