seeking "flowchart" for file access

Part 1
In a previous life, I saw a flowchart -- yes boxes and diamonds and arrows and things -- that described all of the decisions used by the "system services" while processing requests to access data files and similarly protected resources.

QUESTION: Does anyone know of such a flowchart that still for linux/unix?

QUESTION: Instead of a flowchart, is there "pseudo-code" or similar that describes the same processing? (I'm not wanting to read the kernel or file system or other run-time-library sources because I'd need to learn how first.)

Part 2
In the flowchart described above, one decision asked, "Is an access control list (ACL) defined for the object?" If, YES, there was a box saying, "Process the ACL". There was a second flowchart that covered the details of that processing.

QUESTION: Does anyone know of a flowchart for ACL processing?

QUESTION: What about "pseudo-code"?

Part 3
I'm more that willing to read articles, or doc files, or howto or books to learn these details. Please provide web-liography or other references if you have those.

Thanks in advance,
~~~ 0;-Dan
BUMP
QUESTION: Can someone tell me where to find the file access logic in the linux sources?
I'm seeking both traditional permissions as with chmod and chown as well as with access control lists (ACLs) chacl.
I would expect that fopen( ) will eventually access some lower level system call.
fopen( ) is part of the C/C++ run-time-library.
I have no idea where to find any low level system calls.
Thanks in advance,
~~~ 0;-Dan
