I have grown rather attached to winscp for moving files around. Is there something similar for linux?

Filezilla, maybe?
http://filezilla-project.org/client_screenshots.php

It's a cross platform ftp client, it also supports scp;
Just prefix your host/adress with sftp://

yes and if you have ssh and the server installed, you can do file access from the desktop without having a special program.

we use scp and ssh profusely from the command line.

Gnome:
Places>connect_to_server>ssh
