Hi,
This is NOT a Linux question specifically, but I just thought someone here might know - how do I save video in VLC? And so that it plays in this: http://www.gustosoft.com/divx-player...ivx-player.htm ?
(it plays video CDs, that's mpeg-1 I think, i'd have to have it in that format, because the old machine that it's on is too slow to do anything else)
This is quite urgent, please help (there's something on the net I want to save being broadcasted tomorrow )

I think what he means is that the stream he saves with vlc must also be playable in the player he mentions.
When you open up the 'file menu >> open network stream' option in vlc, at the bottom of the dialog you'll see a 'stream/save' button. Click on that and you should be able to select where to save the stream and in what format you want it in. I've found that it sometimes works better than the wizard when you want to transcode the video into a different format.

Yes, that is what I mean. And I tried both of them, wizrd and the other way - not working When I drag the video file into VLC, the bar moves across the timeline but no video window shows up (I think it's saving the *audio* but since I dont have speakers I dont know). PLease help.
You were originally talking about saving network streams, but now you're talking about dragging&dropping files? If all you want to do is convert an existing file from one format to another, there are better tools than vlc, such as ffmpeg or avidemux.
What I would do personally is forget about using vlc altogether, and instead use mplayer with the "-dumpstream" option to save the stream to disk. Then I'd use ffmpeg to convert it into a better format for storage and playback, such as mpeg1, mpeg4 or ogg theora.
