samba client - Cannot resolve name -I#0x3

Hi Iam trying to send a message to a windows machine using smbclient have few questions

1. Do I need to have samba server running on the senders side for this to work smbclient -M -L sam (since there was some error popping up when I try to execute this with out samba service running part of the error is tdb(/var/cache/samba/unexpected.tdb): rec_read bad magic 0x43414341 at offset=4652)

2. After I started the samba service I am getting fallowing message and error

I tried both name smbclient -M -L sam and the IP smbclient -M -I 192.168.11.12

added interface ip=192.168.11.20 bcast=192.168.11.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
Cannot resolve name -L#0x3

Appreciate your help

Best Regards

AFAIK the server does not have to be running... Its been a long time since I have played with messaging. Have you tried?
smbclient -M netbios_name
or
smbclient -M IP_address

What windows version are you running? Messenger service was turn off by default with XP service pack 1 (I believe) due to it being abused and a security. Just turn the service back on. Hopefully, your LAN blocks SMB traffic from the internet.

Messenger service is no longer available with vista or win 7 and replaced with msg.exe (non home versions from what I have read) however, I do not know if it is backwards compatible.

I guess msg is also available with XP...
