Running modern browser on old libgc system

I need to use a modern browser (like Chromium or Opera) on CentOS 6 (updating OS is not an option), but since Linux has this crazy thing regarding glibc, is not possible to simply install a modern browser on CentOS 6.

So I was wondering if there's a way of running an AppImage with a glibc version different from the system. Or another solution to my issue

Thanks!

I find that difficult to believe. CentOS 6 is a current, 'tho not the latest, version.

What desktop environment are you running? What have you tried to do to install Chrome or Opera? Do you have any browser installed. Firefox should be in the repositories.

When I try to install Opera (downloading the RPM from Opera server and running 'sudo yum install ./opera[...].rpm') I see this:

That’s a problem with dependencies...can happen when you don’t use the CentOS repositories.. you just need to install the missing libraries.
Is Opera in the repositories? Firefox should be.
Again, which DE are you using? Most will include a “modern” graphical browser.

Sorry. It's Gnome.

The thing is: CentOS 6 glibc version is lower than glibc used to compile Opera, and since it's not possible to update glibc on CentOS 6 to anything higher than 2.12, CentOS 6 refuses to install Opera (or Chromium/Chrome/whatever). That's why I asked if it's possible to create an AppImage with a different glibc.

I don't think Opera/Chromium/whatever is in the repositories. At least I can't see anything using Yum.

Try to add the epel (Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux) repository to your system
http://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel...t-6.noarch.rpm
and look then what's available there.
These are "newer" packages, not in the standard CentOS 6 repo's, but compiled FOR that release. The above rpm will add that repo to your list of standard repositories.

Have you tried using Mozilla's "static" builds: e.g. http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/r.../linux-x86_64/

firefox can be downloaded (not installed) and run straight from the directory it was unzipped to.
i think that's what mrmazda was refering to.
and i'm sure something similar exists for other browsers, too.
