I just installed Fedora Core 2 this afternoon on my Dell Inspiron 3800 laptop and I'm up and running. I updated the system with the autoupdate feature and all went well. However, earlier this evening I downloaded an RPM, clicked on it, and Gnome told me that no actions are associated with the RPM extension. So here are my ultra newbie question: What program actually opens RPMs, what is the extension for programs (.exe???), and where would I find this program in the directory? Sorry for the elementary questions, but I'm just starting out with Linux.
to install it, you can open a terminal (xterm or konsole) and as root (type su at the prompt, then the root password) type rpm -ivh <packagename>.rpm and it should install for you.
As far as extensions go, I think what Jasper was asking was "what is the extension for an executable file".
The answer is it could be anything, or nothing. Generally for applications there is no extension...the file is merely set as executable via permissions. Sometimes, though, an executable file will have an extension such as run or sh
"where would I find this program in the directory?"
Program executables, or binaries, are mostly found in /bin, /usr/bin, and /usr/local/bin.
Finding these programs can be done with "whereis", "which", "type -p", "locate" and probably a few others.
1. Right click the RPM icon
2, Select Open With > Other Application
3. The RPM Package Installer will be listed.
4. Select the Installer
5. Press "Modify" and set it to be listed on the Open with list., I don't recommend setting it to defualt action in case of problems.
Hi people,
Yes, I've just installed a wine RPM, wine-20040615-mdkdebug.i586.rpm.
I've tried to install RPMs before but never with success, this time as soon as I clicked on the RPM it installed itself pronto. Now when I try to start wine, in KDE, the "the sand clock" cursor thingy comes on rotating and then it stops and nothing happens. Does anyone knows how to solve this problem?
try running wine from the comand line (terminal/console) , then you will come to know the possible error messages due to your wine software if not running!
Also, i would suggest you to get familier using shell instead of GUI.
read the man pages, they are certainly helpful, for instance, try out man rpm :-)
Thanks everybody for your help. Mikshaw, that was exactly the info I was looking for. Someone over at Fedoraforum actually pointed me here: http://fedoraguide.org/fc2/fc2beginn...leclickinstall
and this was the answer. Thanks again.
