RetroArch - a few problems I'm having

using Ubuntu 22.x LTS

I'm having the following problems trying to run the Atari 5200 (Atari 800) emulator that I have installed as a core in RetroArch:

1) When I launch the Atari800 core, Atari800 uses F1 to launch it's menus to use it. It appears as if when I tap F1, then RetroArch's F1 key is taking over and it brings up a RetroArch menu.

2) In RetroArch's input settings, when I attempt to configure my Logitech Gamepad, let's say when I click to assign something like the up button on my gamepad, then RetroArch doesn't seem to be "taking" that input from the gamepad.

3) Sometimes I'm able to get by #1 (by continually pressing f1 I think or clicking something else I can't remember), and when I do try to launch a game, say like Asteroids which plays when using Atari800 without RetroArch, then I loaded in an AtariOS (as it requested) but when I launch/load the game, I get a blank black screen indefinitely.

Addendum:
4) I download the Windows version of Atari800 and it won't recognize my Logitech Gamepad (just like the Linux version of Atari800 won't). I know the gamepad works as I tested it under other emulators.
