Resetting MySQL root password

Hi!

I have forgotten my MySQL root password. How can I change it?
I am using MySQL 3.23 on RH 9.

I think you have to know the old one to change to a new one. Try:

mysqladmin -u root -p <new_password>

I'm not sure if it will prompt you for the old password though.

No, it didn't work.

I tried that... didn't work.

Is there a way to COMPLETELY remove mysql from the system, including all the databases, config files and passwords?

I tried removing mysql from the RH9 add/remove components menu, but when i reinstalled MySQL, it still asked for my old root password.

Well the mysql passwords are stored in the mysql database so I'd imagine deleting that database would COMPLETLY remove mysql. I'm not sure why RedHat did not delete the database. I'd do this:

rpm -qa | grep mysql

Then remove all the mysql related rpms:

rpm -e mysql mysql-server mysql-client etc.

Then check to see if the mysql database was deleted. It should be in /var/lib/mysql and the database file is called mysql.
