Repository update problems in Ubuntu

I'm still having problems updating repositories and installing software on my AMD64. I've updated /etc/apt/sources.list to enable installing multimedia software, however, when I ran sudo apt-get update I received the usual message:

E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

I can't log in as root in Gnome - it's not allowed.

Any ideas? I'd rather not have to go back to KDE.

It looks like another process is locking it. And if you want to enable logging in as root just do:
sudo passwd root
then make up a password for it.
