remux help(term?)

I am trying to combine an mpeg1 video and an mp3 stream. Previously using avidemux2 I edited and extracted a video and audio file from and mpeg movie. I tryed combing them with mplex, with limited results. I got sound for only the first 30 seconds to one minute(the video works perfectly). It ends with an error "to many video packets in the buffer".

After some googling, I get the impression mencoder does the same thing as mplex? I have installed mplayer, but I do not have any manual entry for mencoder.

Is their something I could be doing differently with mplex to make the sound work, or is thier a better program to be using?
