Hello, I have Postfix installed on Debian SARGE 3.1 and I want it to relay mails from authenticated users and I want Postfix get user names and passwords from /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow respectively.
Please advice what configuration changes should I make?
Are all your mail users local? Are they emailing from the command line via mutt or ???
Why not setup IP Based Relay Control, it's usually quite effective. If not, why not setup SASL Auth-Based Relay Contol with TLS Encryption? This will give you the peace of mind you are looking for.

No. All of them are remote and using Outlook to send emails. Why it matters?

because some of my users are mobile and I cannot list all possible IPs in postfix config file.

because I'm not so familar with Linux in general and in Postfix as I want to be, and I'm not sure that it will be easy. If you have some nice manual about it, please give me the link
and read Ralf's howto on pop-before-smtp. It's very simple (just for fun I set it up last night after suggesting it to someone else and it takes a whole 10 minutes).
