Recover grub after winXP installation in Fedora Core 5
HI !
I am using Fedora Core 5 and recently i had to reinstall Winxp on my system.
I tried to recover the grub using following method.
1. Boot off the FC5 first CD.
2. At the boot prompt, type 'linux resucue' & enter.
3. continue with the default options through the prompts.
4. when bash prompt appeard, type 'chroot /mnt/sysimage'.
5. After, type '/sbin/grub-install /dev/hda'.
When the 5th statement excecuted it returnes that there is no devices in /dev.
I went through all the links which appears in the interface when booted using the first CD. But I was unable to find a link related to 'boot from hard drive' or something similer.
The problem you're having is that when you chroot, you are loosing access to the /dev/hda device. Sounds pretty obvious, I know.
I've run across this problem before in Ubuntu. The way I fixed it was to follow similar steps to yours, EXCEPT I skipped doing the 'chroot' command. I just went straight to the command that reinstalls grub to the mbr of your device (hda).
Just before you do the grub-install command, make sure that 'hda' is infact the right hard drive to be installing grub to. The easiest way would be to do one of the following:
Option 1: # ls /dev (then check to see if 'hda' exists)
Option 2: # df (this should show which hard drives are mounted and the device that they are called. this will only work if the fedora cd has automatically mounted the hard drive.)
Anyway, tell me how you go. If you need better explanations then post here again!
