RaLink usb Adapter

I've partitioned my MSI dualcore computer but can't get it to see the RAlink USB adapter. Its turned off and only works with the Windows side. When I run lshw its say's its turned off. I download (from the RAlink disk)the software and now have a TAR file to deal with but no web access. I'm running the most current Ubuntu that's only partially updated. My question is this.

Once updated how do I proceed with the tar file? I'm only slightly familiar with the command blacktop and trying to use an NDS wrapper sounds and looks complicated.
If I completely wipe out windows and go purely Ubuntu will this solve the problem?
Is there and open source that more adaptive to these (hotrod problems)? I say "hotrod" as that we seem to spend more time fixing than enjoying. I don't really want to go back to windows.

Nope it doesnt, to solve the problem is the only solution. What's your wifi dongle brand and model?
