questions about harddisk partitioning

Hey i am about to install fedora 9 on a 9 GB partition.. I usually use the normal user obviously.. but most of the programs install in the /usr/bin directory for all users. I just need 3.3 GB to install matlab to that directory. with fedora 8 I was using 1.5 GB for my normal user partition and all remaining for root.. I wanted to ask is my previous scheme a better option or should I try LVM for the remaining space after partitioning root and normal user. Please guide me in this regard I have never used LVM

9 GB is not much space for a bloated Linux distro. I'd consider installing some leaner Linux if HDD space is that limited. In any case, I'd use only one partition for whole installation if low on space.

ok.. can u plz suggest me I have to get fedora 9 installed with 2 partitions.. one for user's home other root.. how much minimum space should be used what do u recomend ?..
