Question about Upgrading ncftpd

We are currently using ncftpd version 2.7.3 and want to take advantage of the extended user permissions in 2.8.2

This is a production server so I don't want to cause much downtime so I would like some advice on an upgrade procedure. There isn't much info on the net regarding upgrading per se, just installing.

Is it as simple as editing the install_ncftpd.pl file to match my current circumstance, stop the ncftpd daemon then running the install script?

I also want to make sure I have a clean exit strategy incase ncftpd doesn't work properly with the current configurations. What files to backup/restore so I can revert back to the 2.7.3.

Any suggestions?
