question about MySQL and suse 9.2

Hello I wanted to post this tread to see if perhaps I can get some guidance on this issue that I have been strugling with, I have been trying to see if I could write some software to due customer serivice type of work something that would work a lot like the software that a bank uses to service it's customers, every software person who I have spoken to re assures me that that is Impossible for me to accomplish with out a master degre on computer science, however, a friend of mine told me about access in windows he said that might me some thing to would work for me, probrem is licensing fees, not open source and I would really like to go to linux, and some one said it kind gets hunged up around 6 thousend records my data base could grow to millions and most likely will have financical records. so I need something that is portable, perhaps a type of data base management tool that larger organizations use, I guess what im so surprise about is that I did a test on access and the wizard did a data base manager that sort work like a contact manager and bingo, that is the beging of what I need it had all the basic functions data input something called the document and the it could recall records, it was the basic data tool management tool that I'm looking for except that it was not open source so I could not develope it , what I'm building up to is, can some one tell me if MySQL might due what I'm looking to do?? if so where do I get it and how do I get it to run on my system if my system can du that ????

p.s. a brife note is taking me 2 year to put this system together so please be patient with me, on suse 9.2 it said there is about 1000 aplications can someone tell me how to browse this, and how to understand basically what they doe ?????
