python problem

i'm trying to configure gdesklets but it needs python => 2.3
So i got the tar.gz...compiled it...and it works. (i tried rebuilding the src rpm aswell and that works too)
But when configuring gdesklets again it will not see 2.4.

Only when using python2.4 as command will it start.
when just using python i still get version 2.2.

Could the config of gdesklets only see python in /usr/bin ?
Python 2.4 is installed in /usr/local/bin

How can i make the configure see the latest version of Python?

Check your $PATH. Make sure that /usr/local/bin comes before /usr/bin.

If that doesn't work, check the python command. It's usually just a symlink to whatever version it was installed with. If you don't have a python link in /usr/local/bin then create one with (as root)

cd /usr/local/bin && ln -s python2.4 python

Then you must have the link already (or it may be a copy of python2.4). Never mind that, then.

In any case, changing your $PATH will use python2.4 when you run python. In your ~/.bashrc (I assume your using bash, I use zsh myself) put this near the end,

PATH=~/bin:/usr/local/bin:$PATH

If you don't have a ~/bin, create it. This is a good place to keep little personal/wrapper scripts, links and so forth.

As for the config of gdesklets, there should be a config option (./configure --help) to specify a path to python.

I don't remember but you can specify which python to use while configuring,
./configure --with-python2.3
