Psychadelic colors in IceWM when running certain apps

I'm running a Tochiba Tecra 500CDT laptop. (I don't know where to get more detailed hardware information, sorry. Any bash command suggestions? I poked around in /sbin but I got bit [tried to 'vi' a few of 'em and my shell characters went hayware...oops...better not try under 'root' I guess])

I have installed VectorLinux 4.0 on it and when I'm in IceWM, certain programs make the screen colors go funny.

I can load up Xwordpad, aterm, Dillo, Midnight Commander, all without trouble. When I load up Abiword, xfsamba, Sylpheed, or Xmms, the screen colors change when I put my mouse in certain places. To use Abiword as an example:

- When the pointer is anywhere in the main window for Abiword, the program itself looks great. (No functionality changes for any of these by the way).
But the title bar (with _, maximize, and X, 'Untitled 1'.....) and Almost everything else concerning the desktop (icons, wallpaper...) looks similar to a photo negative of itself. The filler around the icon names goes from grey to pink, blues become really grainy (like the resolution went down) and whitish. The clock and CPU monitor are unaffected.

- When the pointer is pointing anywhere outside of Abiword, the desktop goes back to normal, but Abiword goes shades of pink and red with funky colored streaks running through the menu bar making it illegible.

The same happens with variations for the other listed programs.

nrrrrrrggggg!!

While you're here, is there a way to cut and paste text from program to program with IceWM?

Thanks for your time.

Did you ever get this fixed?

If not, check out 5.2 Colormap issues and colormap question. Probably something along those lines. I've never quite gotten a grip on how X handles colors, but I remembered coming across the idea of 'running out of colors' and 'colormap' issues. Probably AbiWord is 'draining' colors from an overloaded display. Old video card? Maybe try tinkering with your settings - raise and lower the depth or see what you can do with the individual apps. Sorry if this isn't much help, but maybe it's a place to start.

(Came across one of your posts saying you needed help with Ice, so went looking for more and turned up this old zero, even if it isn't Ice specific. As far as cutting and pasting, just drag the mouse in one app to select and middle-click in the other to paste.)
