Protection in openoffice spreadsheet created .xls files

I need to use openoffice to create and/or modify .xls files. The problem I am having is that when I have protected either sheet or workbook on my Linux box when the .xls is opened in exel on an M$ box, no password is required to unprotect. It is very frustrating, and I am sure I am missing something basic!!

FYI I am using Kubuntu Intrepid with the latest OO in the repo's

I think it only supports the native OOO file format not MS's format. If you need MS then you need to move to MS box and then save. Could be wrong on this.

I suspect you could be right, what a massive Bill Gates shaped pain in the @rse.
