First time posting here too and i am very very new to linux so bear with me please First of all i think i have worked out how to install a program from source.. unzip it, then configure then make then install? Currently im using Ubuntu and when i try installing my graphics driver i cannot get past stage of make as it says:
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
Now prior to that it says:
checking for XORG... configure: error: Package requirements (xorg-server xproto fontsproto ) were not met:
No package 'xorg-server' found
No package 'xproto' found
No package 'fontsproto' found
Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.
Alternatively, you may set the environment variables XORG_CFLAGS
and XORG_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.
See the pkg-config man page for more details.
Anyone know what i need to do in order to get it right? another thing is i am trying to install pidgin and it says:
configure: error:
You must have the GLib 2.0 development headers installed to build.
If you have these installed already you may need to install pkg-config so
I can find them.
can anyone shed light on this? i am just really tryin to know the basics and get used to installing programs.
um ok, do i jsut copy and paste that into the termnial cause that is what i have done, it said the linx headers are the newest version but couldnt find the package xserver-xorg-dev?!
You are trying to do this the hard way. Now, if you want to do that because you want to learn, that's fine, but you should at least consider the easy way.
Certainly, in my version of Kubuntu (7.10), pidgin is available from repos and the easy way to install new software is to go down the ready-packaged route.
So:
Open a package installer (e.g., synaptic)
Search for the package you want to install
If it is/they are available, fine, otherwise have a look to see whether you have an excessively restrictive set of repositories enabled
Select the package(s) that you want to install
This last stage may well drag in extra packages 'to satisfy dependencies'. Unless there are conflicts, just accept what the package manager suggests.
Thanks salasi for the advice, i knew about the synaptic manager but i thought it was only for certain things such as additionals for the system, and that i had to manually install alot of things i needed. well now i've found out you don't so im going to use synaptic and eventually when i have gotten to grips with linux i'll try installing something manually
i'm gona give it a try later on toonight so i will get back and update how it goes (hopefully all good lol)
