problems installing FORTRAN compiler in SuSeE 8.2

Has anyone else had trouble installing the package g77 (FORTRAN compiler for gcc) on SuSE Linux 8.2? I find that it returns an error every time I attempt to install it--even if it is the only thing installed along with the "Default system" and "Basic Graphical System." The version used in SuSE is 3.3 which has been determoined to be a little buggy. Slackware 9.0 uses version 3.2 which runs and compiles just fine. How can I get a FORTRAN compiler for SuSE? Thank you so much for your kind help!
