Problem with Cron and Mail

I was wondering if some one could explain to me why I am not getting any mail from my cron jobs.

In my /etc/crontab I have the MAILTO=root, and I have merged pine. However, nothing ever shows up. Do I need some other package to actually send the messages to root, or is there more configuration I need to do?

I was reading over my /var/log/crond/current, and this is the error I get

May 12 11:23:00 [CRON] (root) CMD ( /var/spool/cron/lastrun/cron.hourly/test/sh)
May 12 11:23:00 [CRON] (root) MAIL(mailed 5 bytes of output but got status 0xffffffff)

does your MTA show any errors? What MTA are you using? Can you send mail to root with the command

/usr/lib/sendmail -v root < /etc/motd

or

cat /etc/motd | mail root

mdk root-mail

I know this Thread is old,
but i found it because iīve had the same Problem:
cronjobs didnīt work and i canīt send mails to root.
Iīm working with Mandrake 10, so you see this is an actual Problem too ;-)
But in Mandrake i found a way to correct it.
Take a look at /etc/postfix/main.cf
is there a option:
mydomain=...
since i create it my mail is working.

Hay thanks. I'm running 10 to. I assume you put localhost but the next line reads

relayhost = smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com

should that be localhost too?
Gratefully
Alvin
