Problem with CenterICQ with Screen (text becomes garbled)

If I run centericq in screen, after I switch to a different screen and switch back, all the text in that entire terminal becomes garbled. This problem does not happen if I'm on the terminal, but only under X. I tried using rxvt, urxvt, and xterm, and in all three of these terminals the same problem appears.

I went searching on the web to see if there was a solution to this, and I read that you should set "TERM=screen screen", so I did 'alias screen="TERM=screen screen"' and this does indeed solve the issue with garbling. It's just that it completely ruins the status line. So I tried 'alias screen="$TERM=screen screen"', but when I did that, all it gave me when I tried to run screen was "-bash: xterm-color=screen: command not found".

Has anyone else encountered a similar problem when running centericq under screen? If so, how did you manage to fix it? (and yes I heard that pressing ctrl+L twice is supposed to fix it, but if I do that the rest of the terminal is still garbled.)
