Problem while using yum

Hi

I am trying to install sun java 1.5 in my fedora-7 x86_64 machine. I have some rpms to install. If i try to use yum localinstall java*.rpm, I am getting the below error message:

making java-1.5.0-sun-1.5.0.12-1jpp.x86_64.rpm to be installed
Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mir...-7&arch=x86_64 error was
[Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (-2, 'Name or service not known')>
http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pu...ta/repomd.xml: [Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (-2, 'Name or service not known')>

I found that some one else also got the same error message and has posted it in this forum. I checked the solutions. I followed same procedure given there.

Step 1: make sure mirrorList in /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo is uncommented (remove #)
Step 2: check the baseurl is uncommented and correct (remove #). (When I pasted the base url in the browser, and i can open the url)
Step 3: make enabled = 1

After following these three steps also, i am getting the above error message.

Please help.

Thanks

that error is a dns one, not a yum one. can you ping download.fedora.redhat.com? why go through yum anyway though? i doubt there's any point at all when you're installing java. just run "rpm -Uvh java.etc...rpm" instead

I am able to access the url (download.fedora.....) through my browser.

Fedora 7 has got some java already. But i wanted to install Sun java. Hence, I followed the instructions given in
http://liquidat.wordpress.com/2007/0...a-on-fedora-7/
Download and install section.

The last step is the yum command to install around 6 rpm's which fails when i execute it.

I tried the normal way of installing java (i.e after downloading self-extracting bin, just run it to extract). Even though it got installed, when i say which java, only the Fedora's java is shown.

even if i export PATH to the sun java1.5, and then run a small test client to send a SOAP message, it actually uses only Fedora's version. If i run the command,/usr/sbin/alternatives --config java, it should give me the list of java's in the system, so that i can select the sun java from this list. It is not giving that also. This is the reason why i started following the procedure given in the above link

I am not sure what is the difference between the procedure given in the link to install java, and just executing a self extracting binary and running it to install java.

rpm -Uvh java.... command, fails because of dependencies. I am really not sure how else to install it.

try to find a way to un-install cleanly every java in your system first ... check every common installation directories(/etc , /usr/bin , /usr/share , etc etc ) for java stuffs and also check your startup files(.bashrc , .bash_profile for example)... just to make sure ...

then try downloading from sun sites and get java installed onto your system ... follow whatever instructions from the sites or the packages themselves(if any) clearly ...

should be able to do that on every linux distros i believe ...

btw , if you want to upgrade java to a newer version ... sometime it not neccessary to un-installed cleanly the previous version ...

//my suggestion ... but if you can solve your problems through fedora/yum specfic solutions ... then go ahead with them ...

Visit Sun and download the rpm.bin file. Do chmod +x and run the file, then install the rpm with rpm -ivh. If you do, you may want to install galternatives, which is very convenient tool for configuring java settings (among other things).
