Were you using a GUI version of RPM that comes with Red Hat? If so, use it through the command line like this:

Installing:

rpm -i package-to-install.rpm

Removing:

rpm -e package-to-uninstall

Also note that you need to be root (do this by entering su and then the root password) to install/uninstall packages. Also, when removing a package all you need is the general name such as "gaim" and not all of the version info and full name of the orignal package.

For example, to uninstall gaim 0.75 if installed from a file called gaim-0.75-omdk9.2.i586.rpm just enter:

rpm -e gaim

I hope this helps. If you have been using this method then another option is reinstalling RPM from the source. If this doesn't help I'll give you directions for that.

Thanks for a response:-)
When i said 'rpm program get stuck' actually i meant both the X package manager utility and the rpm runnig from the terminal get stuck.
When i run 'rpm -i or -e or -q SomePackage' there was no response from it and i have to press ctrl+z to stop it.
Then as u said reinstalling 'rpm' from the source may solve the problem.
But i am not that familiar in installing applications from the source
[did tried installing few applications from the source in the recent past following the corresponding 'readme' files, but wasnt successfull]
I have also another doubt... Is there any chance here that the rpm database may got corrupted?

Thanks

It is a possibility that it may have. I'm not sure of a way to test this though. I do reccomend learning how to install from the source though, as many apps and things for Linux require it including new kernels you might want to install. Try to install RPM from the source, then give me the errors that it gives you if there are any.

Problem with my 'rpm' seems to be over.
I restarted the system, and now the GUI package manager and the 'rpm' command from the terminal is running as normal.
System seems to have fixed the problem on restart.
I surely have missed some commands that could have fixed the problem without a restart(which is the linux way.. ha..).

Thanks

It's good to hear that you got it working but never fear a good ol' restart now and then.
