Welcome to LQ.

You are right. A password is not accepted. May be an error in the installer.
( 'sh hplip-3.12.4.run' : Better : 'bash hplip-3.12.4.run', as 'sh' is a link to 'dash'.
Or : chmod + x hplip-3.12.4.run && ./hplip-3.12.4.run , but no luck with either.)

The Debian way : Build the hplip packages .deb, version 3.12.4 :
Assume Debian Squeeze ...
1) Please add these lines to /etc/apt/sources.list :
deb-src http://ftp.fi.debian.org/debian/ sid main contrib non-free
deb http://backports.debian.org/debian-backports/ squeeze-backports main

# apt-get update
# apt-get install fakeroot debhelper python-all-dev
Or : # dpkg -i debhelper_9.20120419~bpo60+1_all.deb
... if version 9.* isn't installed with # apt-get install debhelper ( I got version 8* ).
http://backports.debian.org/debian-b...po60+1_all.deb
2)
# apt-get build-dep pyppd
# apt-get build-dep hplip && exit
3)
$ cd <new-folder-1>/
$ apt-get -b source pyppd=0.4.9-6 : 'pyppd_0.4.9-6_all.deb' is created.
# dpkg -i pyppd_0.4.9-6_all.deb && exit
4)
$ cd <new-folder-2>/
$ apt-get -b source hplip=3.12.4-1
.. And all the hplip packages are created (64bits example): hplip_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb
printer-driver-hpijs_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb printer-driver-hpcups_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb
libhpmud0_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb libhpmud-dev_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb
libsane-hpaio_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb
(+ hplip-dbg_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb = The debug package.)

.
