Problem after uninstalling GTK+ to install newer version

I downloaded a new version of GIMP 2.0.1 for my RedHat 9 box. I was having little success installing it because of dependencies. One of the issues was that GIMP needed a newer version of GTK+ and I remembered that I could uninstall programs with Synaptic. I therefore downloaded the new version of GTK+ for my machine and then unistalled GTK+ files using Synaptic. I had read in some thread somewhere to unistall GTK+ and to install the new GTK+ to get GAIM past that dependency. Well....MY SYSTEM BLEW UP...I finally figured out how to get my machine to login to a text login. Learned all about Runlevels and display and window managers. It turned out that Synaptic had basically gutted my Gnome desktop along with a lot of config utilities. I finally got an X windows login that worked using TDM. Once I got to this point, I connected to the Ximian site and installed the Ximian 2 desktop for Red Hat 9. The only problem is that I have many original Gnome files and config utils that are no longer on my machine. For instance, I think I had a CD burning package for burning data CDs. I also had several redhat-config... files that I do not have now. Redhat-config-soundcard was one. I am lost because I do not know what synaptic uninstalled and what the new Ximian desktop replaced. I did get GIMP 2.0.1 installed but now I have two versions on my machine.

On the top of my head,:
* I lost GAIM (reinstalled to v0.77 ...MSN doesn't log in correctly anymore)
* Gnome Fish doesn't give me a fortune anymore (fortune is not found)
* /usr/games is empty
* My Network servers icon is not in the main launcher menu anymore (samba isn't there anymore...I can't connect to my Windows pc to share files but my printing works)

etc...

Is there a log file that Synaptic creates to tell me what was uninstalled/installed to help me?

Thank you for any help,

Steve
