Printing with applications

In Windows there is a printer icon during a pending printing process. In Linux I see none even though the printer is currently printing. Do I have to open QTcups or Printing from System Settings whenever I have to print something?

If you want to see the status of your printing jobs, "lpstat -a" from command line gives you plenty of informations. Or lpq to see the queue status.

The icon is more of an application thing in Linux. There used to be one in gnome-cups-manager, until it became a huge memory leak. Now it's best to leave that off. Don't know if there is something similar for KDE.
