Printing envelopes in OpenOffice

I know others have struggled with this, but I still can't make this work consistently. How do you print envelopes in OpenOffice? I have gone to "insert" selected "envelopes" and then did the three part configuration to make it work. Still, I put an envelope in the slot and it comes out the other side empty! What is the trick here? I know my printer works because it does regular sized documents just fine. When I attempt to print envelopes, however, the desired results just aren't there. If anyone has discovered any tricks or simplified ways of printing envelopes, please let me know! This is terribly frustrating. Thank you in advance!

I usually add an envelope using the wizard, manually edit the address to suit me (position etc, as well as text) and then print just the envelope page (I usually finish up with 2 pages, one completely redundant)

Check the "Printer Language type" setting as discussed in this thread. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...elopes-940914/

The thread you suggested refers to LibreOffice and I'm using OpenOffice. I have gone through all the sequences carefully and all I get is a blank envelope. With all the frustrated postings on this topic, doesn't OO get the clue that the print envelope function is buggy?? I'm no techno-wizard but it would seem that this isn't a terribly difficult function to correct. I have also used a template to try and get this thing working but that doesn't respond either. Again, I know the printer works and the computer works--the question is how to get them to understand each other. Thank you for your help folks, I appreciate your good thoughts and suggestions. (A friend of mine keeps urging me to convert to Slackware...maybe he's right. I'm working now with Xubuntu.)

LibreOffice was forked from OpenOffice. They are very similar. Have you looked at the "Printer Language type" setting?

I know that my printer required that the "Printer Language type" be set to a Postscript setting. Different printers can require diferent protocols. There is no "one size fits all".

Yes, I noticed where you said that on the post you referred to. Where do you find the "Printer Language type" setting? I was unable to find it on my system. Is it something that appears after you click "print" and that page comes up that prepares you to print the document? I found something in the lower left hand corner that said "pdf"--but if I change that it just saves it to a file on my hard drive. Is it possible that I have to save this setting to disk, and then "print" from there?? What a pain! This couldn't be what you're talking about...at least I hope not!

As is pointed out in post#4 of the link I gave, you need to find and run 'spadmin'.
Select the printer, click on Properties..., click on the Device tab and there is the Printer Language type slection box.

Allend, What is "spadmin"? Is this a separate app, or is it a function within OO? I've never heard of it.

spadmin is a printer administration application that is distributed as part of the office suites.

That will depend on how the office suite was packaged for your setup. The spadmin application is probably in the same directory as the other applications (e.g. scalc).
If all else fails, try 'find / -name spadmin -print'

You might look at the user guide available here: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation

As for spadmin, I haven't seen that for some time. Is it still used? I certainly don't have it.

It is still present in the source code. http://svn.apache.org/viewvc/incubat...k/main/padmin/

I've been unable to locate it. Is it possible it's not present on all distros? In any event, my envelopes are still not printing. The weird thing is I was able to print envelopes just fine for quite a while. I'd say it's been in the last six months that this situation has changed. It could be that in the process of installing system upgrades to Xubuntu, something was added (or detracted) that caused this glitch to happen. I'm sure there's a way to make it work--I just haven't figured out what it is....

Sorry, but I am out of ideas. Perhaps try contacting the Xubuntu devs?
