Postscript Files

Good Afternoon to everyone,
I am a student and I noticed that a lot of articles that I read are in .ps format.
My question is how do this files are written, with which software?
Is it ghostscript?
Is it normal openoffice file which converts to .ps?
thanks.

One way to create PostScript files is to "mark up" the text with LaTeX code, run "latex" to produce a .dvi file, which can be converted to .ps with "dvips". There's a LaTeX tutorial here, if you're interested. No doubt you can find a lot of info about LaTeX around the web.

Not sure about OpenOffice.org.
