I just got redhat 9 working, with sendmail as mta. i can revieve mail from anywhere, but cannot access my mailbox via pop3. i can access it from the local machine, but no other machine on the network. i remember reading about how to allow access, but can't seem to find that now
I don't really understand your question. What do you mean you can retrieve mail from anywhere but not pop3? How are you retrieving mail? I also don't understand what you mean by access from the local machine, but no other machine on the network. All computers on your home network are local machines.
What software/application are you trying to use to retrieve mail via POP3?
from the mail server iteslf, there is no problem
however, when i set up microsoft outlook on another computer, it can send mail, but cannot log onto the pop3 server.
I think you will need your RH cd again, put your cd in your cdrom then search for the imap packages then install it.
After install the package, go to /etc/xinetd.d and edit the ipop3 and change the disable = yes to disable = no, restart your xinetd (type /etc/rc.d/init.d/xinetd restart)
Now it should be able for your LAN user to retrieve the mail from your mailbox

i have already done that, and it still does not work
it is as if that port is being blocked
how about try to turn off your firewall ? and see whether your uer can retrieve the mail or not.
How about in windoez you run "telnet your-server-ip 110" it is giving any response?
Sounds like you may be able to help me from here as I use IPTABLEs... everything thus far applies to me...
In other words, I have firewall rules enabled and have installed imap from the redhat cdroms..
Can you let me know what I should do to ensure that the firewall is not blocking?
Also, I have not been able to find documentation as to what I should do now that the service is installed.. i.e. do I need to set up accounts (right now I only use root).
Thanks for your help so far,
