Post Pooched /usr/share/ and can't get a log-in screen

.
.
I did it this time....

Went into /usr/share/ to drag and drop in a new file, and had to go into root to do it
(permissions, you know -)

So, I disconnected from the net, went into root, and gave myself permission to drop in the file, and you (probably) know me.... took the permission away when I was done....

I gave permission to owner - (root)

I gave permission to user - (main acount)

Took away permissions from "other"

Logged out, and did a re-start, from the beginning, so I was sure the changes took place -

And, after the set-up - - BLACK SCREEN (with a notice that the system can't access the file to go into the log-in screen)

Is there a way to salvage the damage ??

Can it be saved ??

Can I just install a second version of my OS (I have plenty of space - 120 Gig HD), and access HD0, and drag the files over ??

OR - did I just BLOW IT - AGAIN.....

Have you changed ownership and permission all over /usr/share? Anyway you have other two options: 1. have you tried to switch to other desktop (e.g. Alt+F2 or Alt+F3)? 2. You can use a liveCD like Knoppix and try to restore the original situation. Just a couple of ideas.

Colucix:

Thanks for the reply -

1) I can't switch screens, because I can't log-in (that's the screen my system says it can't get to)

2) I'm in Knoppix live now, to get on-line, and it won't go into my HD because it sets itself up as an account named "knoppix" instead one of my other account names on the HD, so I can't get permission to access the HD....

I think I'm going to try to set up a second OS (2 versions of the same Nix OS), with the same account names, and try to access hdA that way - if I can, I'll let you (all) know....

but first, I'm going to try and set up another user account in Knoppix (don't know if I can in a live CD - it might just re-boot into the default account) - maybe if I can, and I use one of my user account names from the original OS, I might just pull it off....

BB Later...........

From the Knoppix live CD, you can use sudo to execute commands with root privileges. Furthermore, to change permissions you have to mount the partition in read/write mode. To do this, simply left click on the desktop icon corresponding to that partition: you will see to appear a little green triangle, meaning the partition has been mounted. Then left click on the same icon and do a "change read/write mode".
Now, as you know these dangerous "secrets", please think twice about what you're going to do!

Edit: sorry, I meant "you can use su to execute commands...", just a fast typing typo!
