Pluma & Xed: Why do they now have an RCM option "Insert Emoji"?

RCM? Right-click menu, Context Menu in {very} old Macspeak.

In my opinion it makes absolutely no sense to include this in an app that doesn't have support for desktop publishing, or even email, editing.

I look at GNOME Editor, Kate and KWrite, and I have yet to see it there. (I would scream if I saw it in Geany or Emacs GUI.) I don't often use LibreOffice Writer, but of all the apps I just mentioned, to me it would make the most sense to have this either on the RCM or in Edit> Special Characters.

Just a little annoyance of mine I decided to share. Feel free to move this post to the appropriate topic area if necessary.

A fair number of emoji characters are legitimate Unicode characters.

http://unicode.org/emoji/charts/full-emoji-list.html

They can thus be added to ordinary Unicode text documents which don't include the formatting that would be required by e.g. desktop publishing.

The computing world is never going to give you exactly what you want from it since it has to take account of many and varied groups of folk with different needs and expectations. In this case, you can simply ignore the "Insert emoji" context menu entry and all will be hunky dory.

I guess that's a valid reason for including them. Thanks for the explanation. Cheers.

Caution when using a certain cross-platform app

Just a heads-up for XnView users: Using the Emoji option to apply a caption where the caption includes an Emoji will wipe out the caption. Not surprising, as the XnView creator/maintainer Pierre-e Gougelet often lags behind when it comes to Unicode characters anyway.
