btw, both chinput and scim does not work with either traditional or simplified chinese. Xcin only works with traditional chinese.

Here's the terminal output while running chinput.
Chinput Version 3.0.2 -- XIM Server
Distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL)
Following charsets:
0: -Sony-Fixed-Medium-R-Normal--16-120-100-100-C-80-ISO8859-1
1: -misc-zysong18030-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-c-0-gb2312.1980-0
/home/easy/.pyinput/usrphrase.tab is not a valid pinyin phrase file.
Chinput ................................................[OK]
** (gedit:13289): WARNING **: Unable to open XIM input method, falling back to XLookupString()

I think there is something wrong with some configuration somewhere. Anyway, I give up. Maybe i'll install Fedora one of these days when I'm free and hopefully something will work. Thanks a lot for your help.

PS: And thanks for the tip on how to log in using console mode. That was something new!

Please help with installation of XCIN

hi,

try "zh-CN.utf-8" and "zh_TW.utf-8" as locale settings...that seems to be the default in Red Hat...

sorry, didn't read the posting properly and was looking at the last post on the first page...but the unicode locales may help...you never know...it seems you have bits and pieces missing...

when you upgrade/reinstall your distro, make sure you select Chinese (Simp & Trad) in the language screen...

Hi!

It's me again. Just wanted to let you know that I've installed Fedora Core 2 on my com and xcin is now running well for both traditional and simplifed chinese. Just a note though:

export LANG=zh_CN
export LC_ALL=zh_CN
export LC_CTYPE=zh_CN
export XMODIFIERS="@im=xcin-zh_CN"

This is the entry for my /home/chinese_user/.bashrc
XCIN doesn't work for simplified chinese if I don't include the part which is in italics in the last line (export XMODIFIERS ...)

For Traditional Chinese, the entry is the same as the one I used before:
export LANG=zh_TW.Big5
export LC_ALL=zh_TW.Big5
export LC_CTYPE=zh_TW.Big5
export XMODIFIERS="@im=xcin"

So they are both working. yippee! Thanks again for all the help. Bye bye!

Hi,

That's great! Thanks for the tip about the "xcin-zh_CN" setting in the XMODIFIERS section for simplified Chinese...handy to know...

cheers,

Problem with chinese display and input in oowriter

Hi... me again.

I'm not sure if I should post this question in a new thread. If yes, please let me know and i'll open a new thread.

I'm having trouble using xcin and oowriter. The problem: After I logged into my chinese username and start xcin & oowriter:
1. There are no chinese characters in the Menu. For example in the 'File', 'Editī and so on are replaced with only alphabets 'F' , 'E', 'V' and it is the same with the submenus.
2. When I press CTRL + Spacebar in order to type chinese only a small white box appear.. For example when I type 'ni', numbers will appear in the white box '1 2 3 4 5 6 7 >' without the accompanying chinese characters above the numbers for me to select.

I don't think I'm describing this problem very well. I have a picture (did a printscreen) of the above problem but I don't know how to attach it to this message. According to the rules of this forum, I cannot post attachments. Anyway, if anyone understand this problem, please help. Thanks.

Unhappy Anyone .... help??

Can anyone help?? Should I open a new thread?

Anyway I installed fcitx and now at least I can see what chinese character that I am entering. But the menus in OpenOffice are still not in chinese. In fact they are not in any language ... just "F", "E", "V" and so on. And there's another strange thing: Whenever I open oowriter after logging into my chinese user in the terminal, the default font is always "; MSung Light SC" although I've stated in the option that all Asian fonts are defaulted to AR PL SungtiL GB. And when I clicked on the font to change it, MSung Light SC is not even in the font list ... only AR PL Sungtil GB, Kaitim and some others. This is sooo strange. Why aren't the menus in oowriter displayed in Chinese??

Hi,

When you log into Fedora Core 2, you can select language (along with Desktop choice) and you should see Simplified & Traditional Chinese in the list. If you log in there just about all your menu items should be in Chinese, as should the menus in oowriter.

You probably know this already, but it is a solution. Have you tried the Unicode IME server scim(link below)? It seems to function really well, remember Fedora will use the Unicode locale environments by default, this could be the answer, but I ain't sure...

cheers,

jdw

Hi,

I tried 2 choices:
1. Logged in as normal user (english environment) and then logged into chinese user in the terminal. All applications worked with xcin and fcitx, complete with the chinese menus EXCEPT openoffice applications. The menus are not displayed in any languages at all in openoffice. Btw I got this message in the terminal when opening oowriter:

/home/chinese/.rhopenoffice1.1/soffice: line 102: cd: /home/normal_user: Ȩ޲

I couldn't figure out what Ȩ޲ at first because oowriter and gedit display it just like this. Then i copied it into an HTML file and view it with mozilla. After toggling with the encoding: GB18030 and GB 2312 read Ȩ޲ as 权薏. (UTF-8 couldn't read the encoding at all) So I suppose the error message is something like:

/home/chinese/.rhopenoffice1.1/soffice: line 102: cd: /home/normal_user: 权薏

Whatever does that mean? Anyway I opened /home/chinese/.rhopenoffice1.1/soffice with gedit and these two entries are in line 101 and 102 respectively:
# change back directory
cd "$sd_cwd"

2. At startup itself (graphical login), I changed the language to simplified chinese, and traditional chinese on the second attempt. So this time, everything including the start menus, system messages and desktop were in chinese. But OpenOffice applications still don't display any languages in the menus ... still the same old '"F", "E", "V". Hmmm... what do you make of that?

PS: I found a website where this guy had almost the same problem and here is the screenshot.
http://individual.utoronto.ca/bonert...nts_kaputt.png My screenshot is almost the same as this one except that I don't have the chinese input window on the right.

- I'm trying SCIM but right now I'm having some trouble getting it to work. I'll tinker around and when it works, i'll give it a try with oowriter.
- Thanks for the reply JDW.... you are very patient with me! Btw, if it is not too much of a trouble, can you please explain what you meant by 'Fedora uses Unicode locale environment by default'? Sounds like this 'unicode thing' may be the source of the problem in openoffice.

Chinese input working (finally!) in new distro

Hi,

This is off the topic already since I'm no longer installing XCIN. But I just thought I'd update you on what has been happening. After meddling with some files (xinput and xinitrc, I think) in order to try and get SCIM to work, I just managed to crash the entire FC2 system. The computer hanged after Grub loaded. Couldn't undo anything with boot disk because: a) Couldn't find the files I meddled with, and b) Don't know how to use text-based editor (Learning vim is now high on my to-do list!). Anyway, it was time to try a new distro

1. Installed SUSE 9.1 Personal (Finally, an iso from SUSE!)
2. Installed these packages:
scim, scim-chinese (through apt-get), scim-tables, ttf-arphic and all the chinese fonts, kde3-i18n-zh_CN, and kde3-18n-zh_TW (through YaST)
3. Copied xinitrc to home directory:
cp /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc /home/user/.xinitrc
4. Added these 2 lines in ~/.xinitrc to get SCIM to work at startup:
scim -d
export XMODIFIERS=@im=scim
5. Relogin and scim works with all the applications, especially OpenOffice ... what a relief!

Hopefully everything stays the way it is now and nothing comes crashing down on me ... at least not until I get the hang of this new distro a little

Bye!

Please help with installation of XCIN

Hi,

Good to hear that you got it all working. For a text-based editor, you cannot go past nano for ease of use...much easier to use than vim or emacs, and if you just want to edit configuration files etc, it does it all!

I have installed xcin with apt-get.

So how to set chinese user to have access with the libxcin file?
